i live in the netherlands, we have a similar system as in the UK...
we have 3 gouvernment supported channels (non commercial), and only one of
them is interesting enough to watch...the other 2 try to compete for viewers
with the commercial channels.....because of these channels are funded there
are a lot of programmes that are for a minority of viewers, which is a good
thing imho....
then there are a bunch of commercial channels, how many depends on the city
you live in, because the channels and the local cable-company have to make a
deal about transmission....where i live we have about 10 commercial
channels...these are almost all full of crap...bad movies, bad soaps, lots
of commercials...but they have the largest viewing audience......you
probably now these channels: Fox, MTV, NBC, CNN, national geographic,
discovery...
the result: me and my friends watch videos and DVD's almost all the
time.....or we receive foreign shows or movies in DivX or RealVideo
format....we create our own programming......
