I think there's a difference between soul-based music with
spiritual/religious themes (it took me a few listens to Davis' "Gabriel" to
get what it's really about...), and dorky-ass Born-Again Christian-type
music. I'm a religious person of a certain Christian persuasion but the
dorky junk is just a total turnoff for me, as are the overzealous
proselytizers who are prone to singing them (they turn away more people
from the faith than they attract, IMHO).
I guess what makes 'soulful soul' music (i.e. Davis, some Stevie Wonder
tunes and Wookie's "Battle") much more satisfying to listen to than the
dorky stuff is that it's more creative in its songwriting, and usually
talks about hardships, struggles and challenges, which for me personally
has more spiritual meaning than the mere "We love Jesus, yes we do" type
lyrics.
I realize that this post has probably offended those of you on the extreme
opposite ends of the faith spectrum, but hey...deal with it.
