Rose,
I am a serious Natacha Atlas fan! The other women that I am into who have
similar lines are:
1/. Sussan Deihim comes from Iran originally - she has done some stuff with
Loop Guru that is noteworthy from a beat perspective and some of this stuff
has been remixed as well, look for Sus-San-Tics and Shrinic Visions. The
work that she has done with Richard Horowitz is really worth trying to find,
the one I particularly love is Azax:Attra - Desert Equations that was put
out on Crammed Discs' series Made To Measure. Recently she released an album
called Madman of God, a solo effort also on Crammed that I like a lot. It's
a more acoustic effort but with some very interesting textures. There are
other albums out there but these are the ones I love. She has also played
with people like Trilok Gurtu and a host of others.
2/. Mamak Kadem is the singer for a group called Axiom of Choice which is
essentially a guitar player and herself with various associates. The group
is worth listening to and her voice is a magical thing of beauty! She also
appears on an album by Jamshied Sharifi called "A Prayer For The Soul of
Layla" that I really love! It has people like Hassan Hakmoun on it and Paula
Cole on one track. If you are open to it, Tulku also feature her on their
second album the name of which I forget right now.
3/. Cheikha Rimitti is am Algerian woman in her 70's who is still really
rocking out and who should not be missed by anyone inclined toward
MiddleEastern music. Rimitti has been doing it for a very long time and is
one of the eminence grises of rai music. Check out a disc called Sidi
Mansour which is on Absolute Records and which has a truly stellar line-up
of musicians ranging from the Fowler Brothers (who have played with everyone
from Zappa on out!) on trumpet and trombone, Flea of the Red Hot Chili
Peppers on Bass on some tracks, Robert Fripp doing his inimitable thing on a
couple of tracks as well as a line-up of amazing Middle Eastern musicians as
well. There is a remix CD of some of the tracks from the album that is also
well worth it. This is some serious shit! Over the years she has done
innumerable albums in a wide variety of styles and although her voice is not
everyone's cuppa tea, it is pretty damn unique! There are not many people in
their 70s rocking like the Cheikha, try it, you may very like her a lot.
4/. There is an Italian group by the name of Agricantus that is well worth
a gander! i have a greatest hits cd and the first one that I bought was
called Taureg and it has some great tracks. The bass player is a killer in
the group and they have a pretty unique sound, even if they are not quite in
the league that the ones I mention above are concerned.
5/. Amar - this is Indian music as opposed to Middle Eastern but this some
sweet music and, what really does it for me, her voice is layered over some
lovely drum and bass patterns. Some of the tracks she has recorded are
sublime representations of the depths of drum and bass where it marries with
ethnic sounds drawn from many cultures. Some very trippy sounds indeed! if
you have access to the Talvin Singh comp called Anokha, Amar is the singer
on the first track by Talvin which is called Jaan, the album is worth it for
this track alone in my humble opinion!
I hope that you find and get into some of these sounds, these people are all
a kind of gospel I want to spread and, by the way, I forgot the entire virus
episode but let me tell you that I once sent out a very silly email warning
people of an impending virus and the hoots rang in my ears for months, so I
just forgot about it and learned the lesson! If you want more of this kind
of music, let me know!
