The one thing that is very apparently with most of the "disappointments"
is that they are mostly sophomoric efforts (ie, the follow-up to the
artists' debut releases). I suppose that it can be quite difficult to
put out work that seems to stand up to one's debut. It's very rare that
one's second full-length work can eclipse their debuts, but it has
happened.
So then comes the question of fans' expectations. Are the artists
picking their tunes for the second album to please the fans? The record
labels? Themselves? Chopping down a messful of songs into enough tunes
to fit an album can be a rather daunting task. And if your second album
doesn't do well as the first, then your label will start to wonder if
you are a "one-hit wonder."
Any thoughts on this line of thought?
