Hey Y'all:
I promise that I will write to those of you that I've met individually
within the next week. It was great meeting and chatting with you all. I
probably would have hanged with you after the show if I hadn't pushed my
body for 22 hours straight. I'm getting over an illness, and that was
really maxxing it out.
To the uninitiated going to the Knitting Factory: if you see that a show
is supposed to start at a given time, don't count on it. I thought it
was at 8:00pm (I arrived at 7:30pm after killing myself scrambling to
find a room--DOUBLE CHECK THOSE RESERVATIONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE). I was
then told that the show usually starts an hour later. Ursula didn't get
on stage until about 10:15 or so. I was a bit wiped just waiting...
But she put on an awesome 45-minute set with a live band backing her up.
That woman is definitely the real deal! I've heard of her, like most of
us, since her contribution to 4 Hero's "Two Pages" album four years ago.
I honestly haven't heard most of the new tunes before last night, and I
must say that "What???" is just so wickedly dead-on.
After another wait (guest DJ was spinning, actually), Herbert came on at
around 12:15 and gave us a most memorable set. Dani Siciliano made full
use of her vocal talent quite handedly. There were a few technical
problems in a beginning, and Herbert ended up doing a sound check to be
believed. We were treated to a triple encore that lasted until close to
2am.
I stayed in a hostel about two blocks from the Knitting Factory, which
was quite convenient. As I've left this morning walking along Hollywood
Blvd. toward the Red Line underground transit, the street was blocked
off as bunches of bikers in all shapes, sizes, attire, and types were
zooming through the street. Apparently, there was a bike race that
featured at least 4,200 folks travelling from Venice. I'm not sure where
the finish line was, but it was a neat deal to be able to see it all
during my 20-minute walk.
Okay, I've babbled enough. Those of you who did not make it who were
L.A.-based...did you feel asleep. :-)
Megan, you be the real deal too! Next time, we'll check more record
stores.
Milkweed...thanks for the mix CD and the chat! I will listen to it soon.
MaxCat...hey, man. We should chat more for sure. I used to live in
Irvine for 8 years before moving to SLO. I wish you had a spare Xen Cuts
t-shirt. :-)
Broken Beats....hey man. Send me e-mail so I can get your addy. I'd like
to have your mix CD as well.
And the rest of yous...remind me. My memory can go ga ga at times. :)
I'm looking forward to seeing y'all again. I will write individually
later this week when I have more time/energy.
V.
