Pick of the Week: Various Artists: Darker Than Blue: Soul From Jamdown
(Blood & Fire). This one is a real treat for soul and roots reggae fans
alike. Focussing in on recordings made from 1973-1980, Darker Than Blue
features Jamaican artists covering American soul classics from the ë60s
and ë70s. Itís all here: the soul, the funk, the reggae, the political,
and the lovey dovey. With people like the Tamlins, Alton Ellis, Ken
Boothe, Freddie MacGregor, John Holt and others covering classics
originally recorded by Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Temptations, Nina
Simone and fourteen others, you canít go wrong. Plus loads of these
songs are take from super rare 45ís and other tuff-to-get releases. Then
thereís the stunning artwork and liner notes. Much, much respect to the
Blood & Fire folks for giving us this one. Thank-you!

Picks of the Week: There were two Picks this week as I was out of town
August 6 so missed the opportunity to bring you one then. They are:
Mr. Hermano: Free As the Morning Sun (Disorient). Lush. Gorgeous.
Full-on beauty. Ben Mitchell (aka Sao Benitez) and Chris Fleming (Laws
of Motion label-boss) return to deliver their second full-length under
their Mr. Hermano production tag. Delving ever deeper into jazz and
Brasilian sounds, the guys have really come up with something special.
Their cover of Santanaís "Free As the Morning Sun" (described by a
friend as sounding ëlike a modern-day "Hair"íÖand that was meant with
the utmost respect) is only the tip of the ever-so-well-produced
proverbial iceberg. http://www.mrbongo.com/disorient
Mystic: Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom (Good Vibe/Universal).
ëWow!í Thatís what I thought the first time I heard this woman, back a
few years as she appeared on early tracks produced by the Angel/60
Channels. ëHoly shit, sheís amazing!í is what I think after listening to
this album on repeat. Mystic has a flow, voice and way with words that I
havenít heard in a very long time. This is contemporary hip hop at its
best: intelligent, well-produced, human and heavy hitting. "The Life"
(produced by A Plus) is the bomb; "Ghetto Birds" (produced by the Angel)
is one of the finest examples of lyricism this year; "Neptuneís Jewels"
(Sample 208) is one of the most sensual, generous and honest love songs
Iíve ever heard. And this is all within the first five tracks! A must
have.
Guest: Jackie Pelle dropped by to talk about Spinsters, a documentary
about women DJís she created with Jane Walker. Featuring women DJís from
Toronto, other cities in Canada, the U.S., and U.K., Spinsters does an
excellent job at giving many of us a forum to express some of the
frustrations as well as joys that come from being both female and a DJ.
Women featured include Misstress Barbara, Forest Green, Marcia Carr, DJ
Wasabi, myself and many many others. The filmís initial screenings at
the NFBís John Spotten Cinema and then at Dino & Terryís Loose Joints
weekly drew out diverse and packed audiencesÖ. with much discussion
happening both online and off afterwards! Donít miss the opportunity to
see the film if it screens near you. http://www.spinsters.ca for more
info and contact info.
