Well, what exactly, is America's stance in the middle east?

It offers billions in support and aide to Israel (and Egypt, and Saudi
Arabia, and Turkey and others as well.)

It hopes to achieve a climate in which Isrealis and Palestinians can
    peacefully co-exist.

It acted against Sadaam Hussein's expansionist vision. Further, in the
absence of truly democratic reform by the majority of governments in the
region, it seeks stability by not allowing one despotic dictator or
fanatical regime to gain too much control over the rest.

It spends billions of dollars per annum enriching the economy of the region
    by purchasing oil.

Which one of those planks of US middle east relations, if removed, would
    appease the terrorists?

And further, those who committed these acts have not yet identified who they
are or what precisely their grievance is. This is the essence of cowardice
and, as Elson points out, fanaticism.

To say America is imperfect is a tautology which, at this precise time,
seems rather beside the point. To say America created "the power structure"
that allow such terrorist acts to exist is as meaningless as saying America
manufactured the airplanes which allowed such a terrible result to occur.

Once again, hard as it may be for some to swallow, evil predates America.

The point, if you read the message more carefully, is that
    > some of America`s actions contributed to create the *power structure* that
    > allows for such terrorist acts to exist. In other words, the question is
    > not who threw the first punch, but how is it possible that these kind of
