hey there everyone,
I hope that you're all doing as well as can be in these troubled (to say
the least) times. It didn't feel appropriate for me to be sending out
details on club goings on until today (we all have our own internal
clocks and sensibilities), but there is lots of exciting info to share
about upcoming guests at glide, the Wednesday weekly that I host and DJ
at alongside my lovely 'n funky co-resident, Andrew Allsgood.
First though, a word about last Wednesday, September 12. You know, it
never ceases to amaze me how healing music, community and communication
can be and last week's glide was proof. Neither Andrew or I really felt
up to DJ'ing, but there we were. Surprisingly, given the circumstances,
there were a lot of you as well. The night was amazing in terms of vibe,
with a lot of people moving to the music while talking in large groups
and pairs. It felt wonderful to connect via music and I really want to
thank all those who came out. You really helped to lift our spirits, and
I think vice versa as well. Much needed and a privilege indeed.
Moving into the present and future, you can find us at Gypsy Co-op
tonight, mixing music in the warmth provided the fireplace....and you,
of course. Next Wednesday, DJ Swingsett steps in from New York (via
train or bus) to join us for a FREE gig and celebration of music. In
October, a load of talented locals join us, dropping everything from dub
and roots reggae to nu jazz, house, 2-step, funk and more. Read on for
the full scoop.
As always, if you would prefer to no longer receive these e-notes (or to
only receive Mental Chatter playlists and no event/gig details) simply
write back to let me know. No problem.
Take good care.

DJ Swingsett: a brief bio
DJ'ing since 1992, Swingsett's roots lie in hip hop, rare funk, soul,
and acid jazz. From '95, he turned more heavily to drum 'n bass, deep
house, and nu-jazz, as a resident at influential weekly Konkrete Jungle
and as a Giant Step regular. Rated in the Top 100 International DJís by
both Bikini mag and Streetsound, Swingsett currently holds it down
weekly at d&b landmark Testpress and the deep house 'n broken beat
affair Freaky Deaky.
With DJ Wally, Swingsett released many wicked recordings on Ubiquity and
Liquid Sky. He later hooked up with J. Warrin (formerly of Slide 5) to
co-produce and found ism Records. Their recent Sights Unseen features
vocalist Lisa Shaw (Naked Music) and seamlessly moves through styles,
all with a heavy sub-bass hook. Their new deep house label, Esho
Recordings, features sweet releases by the likes of Julius Papp.
