Matthew K DJ Chart 9th April 2002
1. Rhianna: Oh Baby - Remixes (Sony)
What a find! A new signing but has the mighty talents of 4 Hero on one side
and Dodge aka Venus Tribe on the other, both coming up with wicked remixes.
Love this.
2. John Beltram: Americano (Exceptional)
One of the most talented men in electronic music is back with his 4th album,
and shows him moving into even more jazzier territories. This is an
astounding album.
3. Troublemakers: Too Old To Die (Guidance)
With a fantastic breakbeat led dancefloor friendly remix from Geisha as well
as 2 chilled beauties on the flip, this is a winner.
4. Bugge Wesseltoft: Change - Chillumanti Mix (Jazzland)
Promo only 12" with a fab remix which retains all the elements of the
original, but works in building up funkier drum patterns.
5. Cinematic Orchestra: All That You Need (Ninja Tunes)
Every now and then a record comes along that leaves you devastated by its
beauty. This is one of them and words can't describe it.
6. Jack Costanzo: Calypso Blue - As One Mix (Ubiquity)
Take one classic jazz tune written by Nat King Cole, cover it extremely well
and get Kirk Degiorgio to remix it. Result - what do you think?
7. Bluprint: Mathis & Tetchener (Exceptional)
These guys are a major talent and this shows how the live musician can
always surprise where samples sometime fail. Watch out for the album due
soon, it will be a gem.
8. Modaji: Pre-Sets Sampler (Laws of Motion)
4 track sampler from the forthcoming compilation. Every track here is genius
and in the box for a VERY long time.
9. King Britt Presents Obafunke: Bush Workout (Karma Giraffe)
Yet more proof that King Britt is a fully fledged genius. Collaborating with
African musician Obafunke, the result is a 15 minute voodoo groove.
10. Rednose Distrikt: Nana (Hum Hum)
Coming through Rushour this slow motion house track features some awesome
Rhodes action resulting in one of the funkiest tracks in ages.
11. Org: Organic Language (Revirth)
This has probably been floating about for a while but those Japanese 12's
are so hard to track down, I've only just discovered it. Immense production
with broken beats, double bass AND a Calm mix on the flip. AWESOME.
12. Susumu Yokota: Could Heaven Ever Be Like This - Bugz In The Attic Mix
(Exceptional)
Watch out for Bugz In The Attic this year as they are on a serious roll at
the moment. This is perhaps their best remix yet with an equally exciting
Kyoto Jazz Massive mix on the flip.
13. Mutant Soul Records: Jaam Blue Series 3 (Mutant Soul)
Two amazing dancefloor friendly remixes from the Jimpster here. This is
turning out to be a wicked label.
14. Chaka Khan: I Know You, I Live You - Danny Krivit Edit (Strut)
An old classic thats been given the dancefloor friendly re-edit from Body &
Soul master Danny Krivit. A bit of a favourite for the end of the night.
15. The Currymints: Like It Ocelot (Jacques Laverne Records)
This is turning into an exceptional label, with more examples of some funky
downtempo buisness.
16. DJ Marky: LK (V Recordings)
2 seperate 12's, both excellent showing that the Brazilian drum'n'bass sound
is going from strength to strength. I'm going for the instrumental mix of
'LK'.
17. Ben Horn: Stripped Down (Voodoo)
More Norwegian talent slipping through with this jazz infested slow house
groover.
18. Broadway Project: For the One EP (Memphis Industries)
Brand new 7" double pack of new tracks from the always exciting Memphis
Industries label. More for the chill out sets, but extremely good.
19. Various: Phuturesole (Solemusic)
Glasgow's own Sole label drop an amazing compilation covering everything
from West London through Japan to some of Sole music's own delights.
20. King Britt presents Obafunke: Freedom - Remixes (Karma Giraffe)
After the somewhat amazing original, here we get 2 reworkings from Sir King
Britt and the always interesting DJ Dozia.
21. Jazzanova: Days To Come - Ian O'Brien Mix (CDr)
Mr. O'Brien has now moved to Glasgow, and this is a forthcoming remix from
the much hailed Jazzanova album.
22. Various: Music & Movement Vol 1 (Climate)
Double CD of utterly stunning music, with countless Japanese nuggets finally
getting a release over here. Compiled by Nik Weston, this is the perfect
indicator of where music is just now. With an 8 track vinyl sampler with
most of the highlights included, this is comiplation of the year so far.
23. Kaos: The Renegades EP (Compost)
The greatest label in the world continue to astound with a gorgeous
downtempo 4 track EP.
24. Nina Simone: See Line Woman - MAW Mix (Verve)
First vinyl release of track from forthcoming Verve remix album. Masters at
Work do their finest on this Nina Simone classic.
25. Suv: Do You Remember (Full Cycle)
Drum' n 'bass is back and its releases like this that are the reason why.
Brilliant latin instrumentation fused with outrageous beats to devastating
effect.
26. Ayro: Drink / Let This (Omoa)
Second release from this exciting new Detroit label. Watch out Jazzanova,
these guys are serious contendors with their broken beat productions.
27. Various: Cap One Sampler (Nuphonic)
Two track sampler from the LP of the same name. An amazing reworking of
Peaches and Gonzales by Adam Goldstone shows house music with a punk
attitude while the mix of Playgroup is the best of 80's sounds.
28. Phil Ranelin: Remixes (Hefty)
Very exciting remix album of this early 70's spiritual jazzer. With the
likes of Kirk Degiorgio on remix duties, this is one for the Cinematic
Orchestra fans.
29. Ras: Rhythmic Altered State (Best Seven)
Forthcoming on this Sonar Kollktiv offshoot, this CDr shows yet another
genius talent from the Jazzanova family.
30. Plej: Sampler CD 2000 (CDr)
These guys are going to be massive. Following the release of their mega rare
debut 12" (does anyone actually own a copy) they follow it up with a taster
of their future releases. These guys need to be signed.
