Hey Myrna.
I live in NYC and yes there are a plethora of happenings coming up. Next Tuesday (9/3) at Irving Plaza, Jazzanova and Koop are spinning. I'm going to that. King Britt is spinning tonite at his new residency at Shelter called Harmony. It's a record release party for his new Scuba remix compilation. Some of the dopest shows are Giant Step events so you can check out their site for the latest: http://www.giantstep.net/home.asp. I know Peanut Butter Wolf and Madlib are performing at S.O.B.s fairly soon (also a Giant Step show). Recloose is coming. Last week I danced for 3+ hours to the smorgasbord of funk, hip-hop, house, and classics of DJ ?uestlove of the Roots. It was at Shine, a great intimate venue downtown. The Knitting Factory always has cutting edge jazz performances. I saw and met the legendary jazz violinist Billy Bang there a few months back. Also, if you're feeling the jazz, ch! eck out the Jazz Standard. It is in the basement of Blue Smoke, a relatively new 'upscale' bbq restaurant on 27th. It's really gorgeous downstairs. The atmosphere is great. The only thing that is missing is smoking but you can do that by the bar if you wish. The sound is wonderful and the acts are top notch. I saw Frank Foster and the Loud Minority Band play there a few months back and about two weeks ago, I saw the great Jamaican jazz pianist Monty Alexander. It was truly awesome. Plus the ribs are unstoppable!....check out www.richmedina.net to find out about DJ Rich Medina, who throws a night (I think it's twice a month) dedicated to Fela Kuti. Rich Medina is one of my favourite djs in NYC. He's actually from Philly but he spins quite a bit in NYC. Very deep spiritual beats. The night dedicated to Fela naturally comprises mostly of Fela tunes but he delves into deep house and nu jazz! also. It is the spirit of Fela that is most important in the night. Dope. I think Rich Median also spins at the bar/restaurant called APT. I believe his residency is called something or another '..Rib Shack'. I think the Metro Area crew also have a residency here but I have yet to go there....You should try to check out PS1 museum They have a great event called Summer Warm-Up series which is probably ending fairly soon as summer is almost over (sob). You can check out their web-site at www.ps1.org. And I gotsto give a shout out to DJ QOOL MARV who spins every wed at Spa. Spa is a bit she-she but Qool Marv is one of the best dj's I've ever heard. Darn nice guy too. I'll keep you posted of any other important happenings in NYC.
peace,
ad ease
There's also a bar called APT that Richina
