Funny, I remember seeing Pearl Jam on a triple bill with Smashing Pumpkins
and Red Hot Chili Peppers, before either they or the Pumpkins had an album
out. Like you, I was similarly blown away, especially by Eddie Vedder's
vocals. Their live rendition of The Who's "Baba O'Reilly" completely
changed the way I heard that song. Then again, rock n' roll was enjoying a
resurgence at the time (Grunge was VERY welcome for me, and produced a good
number of modern rock classic records) I dunno, given the sorry state of
rock n'roll these days, Pearl Jam IS a cut above the rest, but they're still
just playing music which fits very comfortably within their established
parameters. So, I guess I find it stale for THEIR standards. I wouldn't say
that I thought "Riot Act" to be a bad record, it just didn't set my world on
fire. Maybe I'm expecting too much.....

    > I'm gonna have to go the other way and disagree with you on this... Far
from 'formulaic', in my opinion, this was one of my favorite records of the
year -- seeing them live in a small club a few weeks back only cemented that
belief... Worlds apart from the first three, it's not even same band....
    they're changin', changin'....
