It's pretty good. The album combines some old
recordings of a project he wasn't able to finish, and
mixes it with some new instrumentation from some of
the same musicians. It begins with a track featuring
Ras Kass, and while that might seem odd, the
combination is perfect. Some of the songs honor
various people who have sampled him in the past
(Diamond D, DJ Shadow). The album ends with a track
featuring brand new vocals from Lou Rawls, and the
effect works great.
The album was recorded and mixed at Capitol Recording
Studios, where Axelrod did much of his praised work.
Egon, who is now with Stones Throw, did an interview
with Axelrod during the sessions, and there are some
great photos along the way (including some with
Madlib, as there is a link between Madlib's father and
Axelrod).
But... the album is very good, but I hope it leads to
an all new project, as I'd like to hear what he would
be capable of doing today.
