Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #76: 'Boom-boom-boom' sound

    Newsflash 13.02.2002

    Dear friends,

Last weekend we both went into party-animal mode: Shuriken - as you can read in a few sentences - added some noises to the Wah Wah sound in London while me Keyser had a lesson about getting G-Stoned in the backstage of Flex in Vienna. I travelled to visit all those lovely people over there especially my two men Cukipapa and Uncle Tom W. Big up again for you boys and thanks for taking care of me!

As I wrote on this Saturday night dr. Richard gave a natural dubbed-out medical treatment for the freaks of Flex. I never saw a crowd before, which goes totally crazy for 90 BPM downtempo tunes. Yes, there was something in the air... Thank you doctor! On Sunday night we didn't relax either: Tom Wieland and guest Florian Keller of Munich's Into Something crew rocked the place on the famous Soulsugar club-night (http://www.soulsugar.org) at Porgy & Bess. I couldn't stop dancing until I felt into coma. Thanks go out to top dancer Pia, Alen "Salvador" S, all members of Sunday Morning Tired Club, Werner Geier (the mix is on its way) and the always funny Mario Kamien (yes, I got caught the train finally!).

Da Shuriken says: 2 AM. Insomniac mode. Listening to the sound of South East London on me radio. Mad reggae soudbwoy interrupts his tunes every 5 seconds letting us know his big ups and that he luvs tha vibe. Still far from annoying. So what we did in the last weeks spent absolutely lazy on the newsletter vibe, a period we deeply regret, but couldn't avoid for all the things happening around us in the real world. I, for example, bought a bunch of clothes and records to release some pressure after meeting college assignment deadlines. A good way to get down to earth about urban consumer culture when you're studying it in an academic context. Hard work I gotta tell ya.

Also had a nice weekend two weeks ago in Brighton, trying to see forever on the see shores (silly thinking about selling seashells), but they were really not those clean days. Clouds gathered as big waves buried braving schoolkids and educated drunkards on the shore. Some of them never returned. So, after some looking, we (so silly Patsy and so relaxed Zoe, both of these ladies excellent company) rather headed for some hot drinks and later on to boogie down at Russ Dewbury's Jazz Rooms. Barrels of fun with Russ himself (great to have met u finally) and Dom 'Hello Luv' Servini who selects the most thrilling tunes when he's not in his instantly loveable let's rock this crowd with classics mode. Sometimes you have to bug out though, don't you. We did. Speaking of the Servini family, can't keep quiet about Lucy. Great audience, cheerful company, a lady with style and the best doorman in the Shoreditch area. Thanx for coming down to Point 101. But that's already the Thursday after Brighton. In the meanwhile I han
ged out with Zsolt Palotai, the most amazing Hungarian dj to walk the face of Earth. Tried to show him around in London. More record shopping as you have probably already guessed.

To cut it short, I spinned with Nik 'You Gain Weight Easily in Japan' Weston at his very own Bite Yer Granny night at Point 101 Bar. Mukatsuku for life. It's always good fun there, drunk guys gang-requesting multiple re-winds of The Nightblooming Jazzmen's version of Freedom Jazz Dance. Makes me puzzled about my preconceptions.

Saturday it was another Wah Wah clash @ Catch, Dom, Chris Goss and me handling the dex. Great visuals, friendly crowd action, Jorgos, Reka, Anna, Felix, Miriam, Vincent, Patsy, the Key Recordings crew buzzing around with their hot CD-Rs, Richard Ellis (Solar Apple Quarktet) hit me their forthcoming single, Do You Really Love Me? Something to keep both eyes open for in the shops. Thanks for all of you for making this night something to remember to.

In the middle of all this and some well-deserved London wanderings - hell I've been living here for four months and haven't really had time to look around - I met briefly Vadim, Kela and the family. Looking forward to hear your new album Vads, and get well soon!

Last, but not least, I'd like to contribute Alan Brown's (the man holding the interplanetary record for the longest regular newsletters, subscribe at cukipapa@chello.at for extensive essays on the history of Viennese baking) entertaining (see Don Quijote) quest for justice in music related print media. 'Showing positive examples, not trashing wierd stuff we don't like' seems to be his latest message. We act in this spirit, and suggest you ask your local hip hop or beats merchant to be nice to you and get out his remaining copies of Waxpoetics from under the counter. It's not the latest dj Shadow produced tune, but printed word stuff. A self-proclaimed 'Quarterly Journal' of everything beat-junkies have wet dreams about. On point layout, all your rare soul, jazz and funk cover art, interviews with Idris Muhammad, Madlib, Shadow and Cut Chemist, Bobbito, plus one by Soulman - one man authority in beat digging science. (We've been referring his www.worldofbeats.com site quite a few times already in our newslett
ers). And this is far from a complete list. In depth features shedding lights on the world of record fairs, specialist shops, eBay's effects, hip hop studio culture, the Brainfreeze phenomenon, David Axelrod, Blaxploitation flicks, heart warming photographs of dusty American record stores packed to their maximum storage capacity with vinyl, reviews of book and records we'd love to get. What more can I wish for? It's nice to catch a mag at the first issue, and follow how it develops. Waxpoetics steals the show with it's debut, can't wait till the second one comes out. Until then, I hang on the www.waxpoetics.com site for further education.

This week's reading is just a taste of this phat mag:

"My thing was the bass drum. I used to hear this 'boom-boom-boom' sound and run out the house and dance underneath the bass drum player. I can still remember the guy with the bass drum saying 'Move your ass out from under this drum or I'll hit you with a mallet!' I was walking between a bass drum player and the snare drum player." (Idris Muhammad about his childhood in New Orleans)

Keep on dancing under the bass drum till next week!
