Dear listees,
I've been asked by my publisher to put forward a music book proposal. This will be a reference book covering ALL aspects of music since the birth of rock'n'roll. Amongst it's features will be a dictionary of terms, genre-defining essays, biographies, reviews, quotations, a directory of sources of information (magazines, books, organizations, record shops), articles on the music industry, a guide to world music etc. etc. The book will be aimed at music professionals, students, and fans. It has to reach out to as wide an audience as possible. It would be written by a vast number of industry experts - djs, journalists, producers, historians etc. etc.
If any of you have any suggestions about the type of information that a reference book on music might contain that you would find useful or interesting, please let me know.
Basically, every question you've ever wondered about modern music should be answered in this book...so what kind of questions would you want to ask? Needless to say, I'm most interested in the kind of information you have had difficulty in getting your hands on so far.
And just one more question.
Is there a better term to encompass every type of non-classical music style from 1950s - present day other than 'pop' or 'rock'?
These two terms have so many specific connotations, and the book will be covering so much that doesn't (in my mind) sit happily under these umbrella terms - I'm talking dance music, underground styles, and especially our very own acid jazz / nu-jazz / broken beat genres (etc.) - that it's going to be a task in itself to find a suitable title for the work...
Any suggestions or ideas to any of the above would be most gratefully received!
Thanks all.
Helen.
