What up peoples! I've just dusted myself off after
making angels in the snow outside for the past 20
minutes, and my snowpants are drying over the fake
fire here in the office (what's up guys! This is only
taking me a few minutes, I swear). Been a mad hectic
week since...well...last week. Canadian Music Week
breezed through Toronto...and was it ever a mild
breeze. What is with the lack of 'official promotion'
for events showcasing styles of music besides those
based on self-congratulatory guitar noodling? Not
that I don't dig some nice indie rock shit at times,
but the lack of interest in promoting electronic and
urban music is completely reflective of the archaic
views of a music industry built on guarenteed returns
on financial investments in artists that are churn out
these styles in the most palatable and boring forms
for the mainstream. It's pretty sad.
YA GOT THAT? If I was in grade 11 english class, I'd
probably get red marks all over that last sentence.
Ok, so the rant could go on and on...but really, I
needs ta let you peoples know about a very special
guest reaching up to the 'BEST KEPT SECRET' this
evening on CHRY 105.5 FM 6-8 PM EST (check it clearer
and cleaner at http://www.yorku.ca/chry)
?????TONIGHT?????(cause it all about the queries)
The one and only PAW MIWA aka PPPP aka Agent 204 will
be reaching up (hands outstreched for sho) to blend up
some funk, post-punk, no wave, and melodic electronic
treats for the 'Best Kept' faithful. Last time he
touched down on the show, Paw blew our minds with
tight selections and an encyclopaedic understanding of
the choons he digs. Definitely tune in tonight if
you're into getting schooled on some different
biznizz, as Dalia and I try to stay outta the way of
his hands banging out drum patterns on the edge of the
mixer.
Come and check out Dalia and myself Venus tomorrow
(Thurs Mar 7) night at 'Sisterfest 2002' throwing down
some tunes along with other Chicksdigit femme fatales
Chocolate, Freedom, Lee Lee Mishi, and Sara Scruton
from 8-12 PM. This is an event celebrating the
fabulousness of women for International Womens' Day,
and it's going down all day until late at George Brown
College (200 King St. East). Daytime activities
include discussion panels, seminars, guest speakers,
and films related to women's issues. Evening events
kick off at 6 PM with poetry from MC True and Maureen
Hynes, a performance by the legendary Salome Bey at
7:30 PM, Kim Doolittle, Tuku, and Laura Hubert working
the jazz and blues. Admission is only $2!!
Chicks Dig It has made itself a new Monday night home
at Apothecary (340 Adelaide St at Peter in beautiful
downtown T.O.). Respect to everyone who reached out
this Monday past! The place was packed with people
dancing, drinking, chatting, and with some dude on
accordian freestyling chords with a percussionist
jamming alongside. Niceness! All the selectahs were
wikkid, of course...big ups to Sabrina, Chocolate,
Denise Benson, and Freedom who provided the tasty
ambience. This week check out special guest DJ Maus
from Montreal bringing the drum and bass alongside DJs
Jocelyn, QueenSyze, Tara, Chocolate, and Freedom.
Should be rough and tough! All kicks off at 9:30 PM,
and admish is pay-what-you-can ($2 suggested
donation).
And every Tuesday night, come check me (Venus) at
Tempo Restaurant and Bar (596 College St. at Clinton)
for some tasty jazzed out riddims...going all over the
jazz inflected music map from 9:30 PM onwards. Big
ups to Greg, Rob, and the whole Tempo massive! Those
pan seared seafood dumplings are buttah...
'BEST KEPT SECRET'...hell no, we can't keep it under
wraps forever...Dalia and Venus doin it to the death!
Peace and much respect to you all...
