Tom Waits is stalking me.
I'm convinced, because I ran into him again this weekend at Grace
Cathedral when we went to see James Carter and Huun-Huur-Tu, the
Tuvan throat-singing ensemble. He did his best not to make direct
eye-contact as he passed down the center aisle of the great hall
(twice!), but I could sense how much he wanted to come over and say
hello. Tom - if you're reading this, the answer is still no.....
Now that's off my chest I can tell you about what's in store for this
evening. We'll spin "Sweet & Sour," the latest full-length from Phil
Asher aka Focus. One of the foremost producers of the West London
broken-beat genre, Asher finally unleashes his debut album following
a string of exceptional EPs and remixes. Techno, jazz and soul are
given the Restless Soul re-rub and the result is a disc that plays to
both the head and feet.
"Moshi Moshi: Nu Sounds From Japan" - UK DJ Nik Weston has taken his
obession with Japan to the next logical step: a compilation album
filled with choice cuts from the cream of the country's producers and
remixers. Thirteen old and new tracks from UFO, Calm, Mondo Grosso,
Yukihiro Fukutomi and others cover all the musical bases and a number
of them are unavailable elsewhere. Seek this one out.
Paloma: "Sometimes We Love You Truly" - There seems to be no end to
the list of excellent labels and artists in Vienna and you can count
Fabrique among them. Earlier this year I picked up Kava's "Hidden &
Direct EP" and now comes the debut album from Berlin's Paloma - a duo
comprised of Hannes Strobl (who also records as Bassman) and Hannon
Leichtmann (aka Static) who records for Sonar Kollektiv. Both of them
began as participants in the local free jazz scene, giving them a
solid sense of melody and structure, along with the ability to play a
variety of instruments. Guest vocalists include Jazznova's Clara
Hill, Erik Butts and Kristiina Tuomi, who add additional depth to the
jazzy grooves. You might also want to check out "Superfabrique," a
compilation that features all the artists on the roster, along with a
few selected friends.
V/A: "California Soul" - The folks at Ubiquity's Luv N' Haight
imprint have worked hard to unearth several of the songs found on
this dope compilation of West Coast soul, funk and Latin jams. Many
of the tracks hail from the mid-seventies and were sourced from the
original masters, but in certain cases, taken from vintage vinyl and
run through noise-reduction filters. No matter, as it's all about the
music and every track is stellar!
Juryman: "Escape To Where" - The latest offering from Ian Simmonds'
alter ego does a fine job of balancing the dark and lighter sides of
techno, as well as juxtaposing his computer programming with live
instrumentation. Tempos vary and minor chords predominate, but the
vibe remains sexy and deep.
Finally, for those who enjoy a good mix CD to act as the soundtrack
for lounging around your pad, check out "Cafe des Artistes" on Milan
Records. Mick Cole has done a nice job of compiling some of our
favorites (D*Note, Nuspirit Helsinki, Mr Scruff, Thunderball, Fila
Brazillia, etc.) and placing them in a context that's smooth and
sensible.
Coming up: Mark your calendar for November 19th. That's when we'll
run our special mix from Swiss producer Beat Soler, aka Seelenluft.
That's it for this week - ciao for now,
David
