Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #95: Broken Violin
Newsflash 5. November 2002
Dear friends,
You got no newsletter for weeks but now we have good reason again to drop
you a few lines. Just a bit more than a week ago we made a short tour in
North-Eastern Germany (Berlin-Rostock-Greifswald). The tour was organised by
half-Hungarian Roland Possehl, member of the Beat Box dj posse in Rostock
and one of the nicest persons in the dj network where we are stuck. Other
superb guy to make this possible was Christian aka dj MCC (of Microfish /
Sonar Kollektiv and Al-Haca Sound System / Different Drummer).
On Wednesday we visited the offices of two of our very favourite labels,
Crippled Dick and Sonar Kollektiv at last to see where all those fine music
comes from and to pick up some of their latest stuff. Once again big up for
the Jazzanova guys for keep Sonar alive. We are glad to meet lots of these
people later on the party as well. Despite the lazy habit of Berliners of
coming to the party after 1 AM we had a lovely time. We would like to say hi
to Svjetlana Tresk and the Crippled guys, Volker Meitz, Cornelius Tittel,
Daniel Best, Daniel Paul and Hans Schaaf (Slope), Stefan Rogall, Roskow
Kretschmann, that funny Japanese guy ("the party's just begun" he said after
everybody's went home at 4 AM) and all the German and Hungarian ladies and
gentlemen who came down to the club called Bastard.
Rostock and Greifswald was just as much fun as the German capital. People in
remote places often happen to know the score just as well as inhabitants of
cultural metropolis (150 people in Berlin, 300 in Rostock and 400 in the
tiny Greifswald were rocking the places!). More greetings to Ina, Matthias &
Anja, Holger and Robert (the Beat Box djs), Ulrike, Christian & Gertrud and
Alex. We hope to see you all soon again.
Thanks again to Roland for keeping us well fed, providing nuff time to sleep
and taking us to the most remote record store we ever visited. Where
exactly? We are not about to give away any details just yet! You should have
known better the way of vinyl junkies. :)
Another short story on Berliners. Some people might think that Germans
generally lack any sense of humour, but they should think twice, before
saying stupid stereotypes such as this. While discussing Hungarian
holiday-memories with Roland's friends in Berlin, we happened to discuss the
annoying gipsy violinists who usually bother tourist in folky restaurants
with loud and cheesy melodies until they push some foreign currency under
the strings. (A stunt probably learnt from lap dancers in the West.) Earlier
in the process, poor tourists are usually asked what their favourite song
is. My usual reply is "10 minutes of silence", but Matthias, a decent
dentist from Berlin came up with a better title to say that night. The name
of his favourite one bears the shocking name of the "Broken Violin". Gorilla
humour at its best and also a reference to the sound of broken instruments
from teh previous newsletter.
Keep on groovin till next week!
