STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
In true fusion style, I decided to work my guests and the Trainspotters'
Corner segment into one on last week's show. The Local People crew were
fully represented and each brought in a track that their tune on EP 001
connected with. Well actually, Lanu fronted on this approach, but made up
for it in the best way by bringing in a brand new track. Benjamin Tobias
played a Weather Report drum/crowd sample which was buried in his track
"This Time" as well as a cassette demo of an earlier track based on the same
sample. Grantham aka Suburban Lights brought in a classic K&D rework of
Patrick Pulsinger which was used as a mastering reference for his original
album that first included "Jump Jazz". And I played a tune from a $1 album
called "Big Crime Movie Themes" which supplied the horn stab used in
"Psybossa".
In all the madness, there was plenty of music left at the end of the show
that I still hadn't played. Oh well, there's always tomorrow. Also tomorrow,
I'll have a mix from Denmark's DJ Wunderbaum who has recently compiled the
superb "Companionship" collection of new Scandanavian grooves, and will soon
be unleashing his Povo project on the world, putting the jazz back in "nu
jazz".
Where am I off to now? Open Sesame of course. Joining Kano and I tonight
will be multi-instrumentalist Rama playing live percussion, flute, vox and
more. You may even remember him playing live on stage back in the day at
Cocoa Butter. He speedily switches instruments and sometimes even plays a
few at once, in fact we're pretty sure he has 8 arms!
Also check below for some links to reviews of the Other-Worldly Fusions
compilation, as well as a spot you can pick it cheaply and quickly online.
peace
Ennio Styles
