Before Norah Jones became "Norah Jones", I remember
going to anoushkashankar.com last year and seeing a
photo of Anoushka and the caption said "my sister,
Norah Jones". At first I thought wow, they do look
alike, but maybe "sister" in this case meant a good
friend. They both have tattoos on their lower backs,
but I had to know who she was.
I searched the Norah Jones site at the time and she
was selling her EP at the time. I heard some of the
songs and really liked it, the kind of lounge-jazz she
is known for. Her bio didn't mention Ravi Shankar, so
I thought maybe Norah was Anoushka's good friend.
Then Norah's album came out. I bought the CD and that
cover photo... c'mon. That's the face of her father.
He talks about her in his "Raga Mala" book, but not by
name. I guess there was some tension since he had no
impact in her life, but he talked about "a young woman
who wants to become a musician herself". Even without
any input from dad, his love of music, as well as his
love of jazz, is evident.
How many female vocalists of her age gain the kind of
respect she has had this year? Is it because she is
in the "jazz" category, is it because she is on Blue
Note? If Christina Aguilera did her album of Etta
James covers, and peformed it in a very classy manner,
would it gain the kind of press that Jones' album did?
Jones must know the kind of position she's in, and it
will be interesting to see what she will be able to
pull next.
