On the topic of contemporary jazz singers, I thought I'd just throw a couple names out there that I am really digging.
Carmen Lundy - has made quite a few albums i believe, but her new one "this is carmen lundy" is by far the best (though there are steller moments on all. but on this one, she gets full creative control and does her soulful thing. "all day all night" was caned by Gilles earlier.
Grazyna Auguscik - a local chicago treasure. her album "fragile" with Brazillian great Paulinho Garcia is one of the best bossa albums i've ever heard. her other work is eclectic but always innovative and pretty. she's done more housey stuff with anthony nicholson and robert grillo.
Patricia Barber - got into her very skeptically, as her persona always rubbed me the wrong way. but she can swing or melt hearts with the best of em - as long as you have a dictionary nearby to comprehend her pretentious, yet poetic, lyrics.
dee dee bridgewater - i want to like her stuff more. she is fantastic live, but i don't think she's had the right music to bring our her soulfulness as yet on LP.
i'm not too big on the other chicago names - diana krall or kurt elling (though he has some nice stuff).
others??
