I had a similar question a little while back and some kind person
pointed me in the direction of CD Wave, which is mad easy to use to
record mixes and cut large .wav files into smaller ones (useful for
cutting up a mix). I don't know if this software is available for the
mac, though. I use the freeware program Audacity to perform simple
editing if need be.
My PC laptop's sound card is pretty crappy, so I ended up buying a USB
sound card (m-audio's Duo) through which I run my mixer. Easy as pie. I
suspect you won't need the external sound card with the apple laptop
(just get and rca to 1/8" plug patch cable).
