Greetings once again,
This week brings several interesting new releases, beginning with the full album from (Ben) Mitchell & (Russ) Dewbury, entitled Rapping With The Gods. In case you don't know these gentlemen, Ben is a founding member of Mr. Hermano and Russ has been running a jazz dance night in Brighton for over 15 years, hosts his own show on the BBC and sits in for Gilles Peterson on "Worldwide" regularly.
As you might imagine, this is a very soulful album that draws on many influences, including Latin, African, bossa, disco and funk. It reminds me of a revue with showcase performances from different acts, each offering a critical component of the overall package. Guests include vocalist Billie Godfrey, Daya & James Collins from Fertile Ground and Nigerian saxophonist Bukky Leo. Highly recommended.
From the Codek label comes Whistle Me Higher from Bingo Palace. A difficult album to describe, as it isn't tied to one definable sound. Bits of it are slow and moody with old Moogs going off in the background, while others are bright, bouncy and smack of modern electronics. Of course the bingo game that kicks off the record adds to the overall strangeness, which in my book is a good thing. The duo of Ventilato & Frank Heer claim to be influenced by movie soundtracks of various kinds, which makes a great deal of sense after hearing the album in its entirety. Very evocative and worth checking out.
Madlib has to be one of the most prolific producers in the biz right now, with his work as Yesterday's New Quintet, Quasimodo and Lootpack. New albums due out in the coming months include the Jaylib project (w/Jay Dee), Madvilliian (w/MF Doom) and Shades Of Blue: Madlib Invades Blue Note - a collection of remixes from the Blue Note catalog. Shades...takes classic recordings from Bobbi Humphrey, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, Horace Silver and others, then adds new musical and percussive elements to create fresh tracks that pay homage to the originals. We'll sample Shades Of Blue tonight and in the weeks to come, the many other personalities of this talented individual.
Also on deck is Camino Real, the latest effort from Buscemi, Tre from The Dining Rooms, electronic wizardry from Freeform via Condensed - a collection of previously released material compiled by Burnt Friedman, new singles from Doctor Rockit, iCube and Seiji vs. Q-Tip.
They'll also be tickets for Underworld's April 26th appearance at the Warfield and Chris Clark / Mira Calix at Club Six this weekend.
Until next week - ciao for now,
David
