STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
It warms my heart to have had such a strong response to RRR's radiothon.
Thanks to everyone who has subscribed to show their support for the station
and for Stylin. If you haven't paid yet, you've got until September 24th to
pay up to be eligible for all the prizes. You can probably even sneak in a
late subscription before then. Just email me directly or check these links.

It was more recent faves of mine and yours as well as a couple of newies
with part 2 of our Radiothon Rewind. I even managed to fit in 2
Trainspotters' Corners. First up was the flamenco house floorfiller "Jaleo"
from the Truby Trio's debut album "Elevator Music" on Compost. Former Stylin
guest Rainer Truby claims to be a fan of Trainspotters' Corner, but I think
this may be the first time he's featured on it. The live guitar and Concha
Buika's vocals are at the centre of the tune, but the bass and horns? For
those we need to turn to Cuba's don of "super son", Juan Pablo Torres. I
already had a few of Juan Pablo's 70s albums from my visit to Cuba 6 years
ago, each one containing masterpieces of the super son style, mixing
classic son (the Cuban roots of salsa) with a touch of funk and electronics
and JPT's fat trombone work. But it wasn't until recently that I came across
the track "Malaguena" with that irresistible bassline and horns.

The other Trainspotters' Corner was a recent tune called "Radio Caca" by
French act Jackson. It verges on being a "glitch" record which is not
usually my thing, but makes it into the Stylin bag for that added dose of
funk missing from too many glitch records. I can't be 100% sure of this
because it's such a tiny snippet that keeps coming in (no more than one beat
of the bar), but I'm pretty sure that's a little bit of Chic's midtempo
disco laugh-along "Funny Bone" in there. I don't care how successful they
were - Chic are dope! And did you know that guitarist Nile Rodgers was a
Black Panther before he produced records for Madonna and Duran Duran?

the second file for an interesting interview with Nile about the Black
Panther days)
Hope you can catch us tomorrow, for double Sydney trouble with Huwston and
Nathan McLay.
until then
