23 From Moscow: The Best of 2002

Happy New Year! It was a musically rich and interesting year, wasn’t it? I
would like to thank everyone for support! Especially the guys who came
during 2002 to Moscow: Tom Wieland, who came twice (Hannibal rules!), Alan
“Cukipapa” Brown and Yoshihiro Okino who has finished his tour here in
    Russia.
So here are the tunes that rocked our little scene down here.

    December 2002 Chart

A bit too late, but still… here goes the english version…

    1. Kyoto Jazz Massive “Stargazer” (Compost)

Almost every track from the “Spirit Of The Sun” album could be number one in
this chart. “Stargazer” is the best instrumental one. Melody, harmony,
rhythm – everything is here. Respect!

    2. Organ Language “Detuned Atmosphere” (Fuego)

Japanese musician Kiyotaka Fukugawa aka Calm aka Organ Language really
proves that coolest broken beat jazz can be made some 15 thousand kilometers
from West London! “Detuned Atmosphere” came out on a limited edition vynil
in 2001 and now it was included by our friend Nik Weston into his wonderful
“Moshi Moshi” compilation, which really shows all sides of modern Japanese
jazz’n’dance scene. Moshi! Moshi! Pick up the phone to hear some brand nu
sounds from the country of the Rising Sun.

    3. United Future Organization “Everyday Routine” (Cutting Edge)

Here is what Toshio Matsuura (who has left U.F.O. this year to start his own
production) says about the “Everyday Routine” track: “Every first Saturday
of every month we are doing our “Free Form” show on the J-Wave radio
station. Once during the show Raphael has played a track that had that
sample - “tired everyday routine”. These words have fixed in our minds… and
we decided to use them in one of the tracks. As a matter of fact, we’ve
finished the production work for this one during 3 days. I think one can
feel that the main thing here is the distinctive idea and the power of
    concentration”.

    4. dj Krush “The Lost Voices” featuring Sly & Robbie (Sony)

Krush goes dub again! We have been waiting for this since the times of “On
The Dub-ble”, the track which was originally on his first album about 10
years ago. His 7th record “Shinso: Message At The Depth” was partly recorded
in… Jamaica. Can you feel the smell of kemuri in the air again?

    5. Forces Of Nature “Loop Addiction” (Fuego)

“Loop Addiction” by Forces of Nature will make you remember the times of
good old acid jazz. Oh, and it will blow your head on the dancefloor!
Another one from the “Moshi Moshi” compilation…

    6. Glucklich V – 12” (Compost)

This is a wonderful prologue to the new delicious compilation of brazilian
gems from the past, the present and the future. For this 12” Rainer Truby
has chosen 2 exclusive tracks by Wagon Cookin and Nu Tropic, and also a
classic track “Casa Forte” which came out back in 1984. A must-have!

    7. Hird “Keep You Hird” (Ecco.Chamber)
This one comes from the beautiful Alan Brown’s compilation “Destination:Out”
. And this one is too beautiful to explain in words.

    8. Jair Oliveira “Todas As Letras (Sou Teu Nego) (Mumo)

Wonderful brazilian jazz. One of many wonderful tracks included by London’s
Mike Chadwick in the “Music & Movement Vol.2” compilation. The more i listen
to this kind of music, the more i want to start studying Portugese.

    9. Moonstar “Dupont remixes” (Compost)

This was a big hit with everyone this year, i beleive…

    10. Peace Orchestra “Henry” (Zero db mix) (G-Stone)

Zero db once again prove their reputation of remix-masters. One of the best
    reworks from the “Reset” album.

    11. As One “Another Revolution” (Stacey Pullen remix) (Ubiquity)

Let’s call this “BBB” – “Broken Beat Beauty”

    12. Shrimp “Voyager Eye” (Nylon)

Electric soul & jazz out of Portugal. Very rich, bright & deep. Electric
sounds breaking into pieces inside your mind, calming saxophone, sexy
    vocals. Something brand new…

    13. EU “Wienn” (Cheburek)

EU are Ilya Baramiya and Alexandr Zaitsev, in Russia they are known as
“Yolochniye Igrushki” which means “Christmas-tree toys”. St.Petersburg’s
Cheburek label gives us a chance to hear some EU stuff which was earlier out
on UK label Pause_2 recordings. Plus some extra remixes by St.Petersburg
finest electronic people – Klutch, PCP, Tenzor. Rough lyricism and lyrical
roughness – that’s what we love EU for.

    14. Victor Davies “Sound of The Samba” (Da Lata remix) (JCR)

Wonderful remix work by Da Lata. Dancefloor stuff, for sure.

    15. Nu Spirit Helsinki “Seis Por Ocho (Original Jazz Session Mix) (Mumo)

Another masterpiece from the “Music & Movement 2”. They make hot jazz in
    cold Finland, you know.

    16. Megablast “Tribute EP” (Into This)
Megablast is a Viennese musician Sascha Weisz. Four tracks – four downtempo
acid-jazz masterpieces. Very deep, very sunny and very …“african” sound, i
    should say.

    17. Garsaaidi “Frank Zaffa” (Lascelles mix) (Compost)

Egyptian musician Garsaaidi is a famous specialist in North African and
Middle Eastern music. His “Frank Zaffa” track first appered on the Future
Sound Of Jazz Vol.3, and this year Compost re-releases it adding remixes by
    Sequel and Florian Keller.

    18. Deejedies “Smokey Dollar” (?)

85 bpm, funky guitars, scratches. Smokin’! Have i told you these guys will
go a long way? Already played and loved by the ones like Alan “Cukipapa’
    Brown and U.F.O.

    19. Sarah Vaughan “Summertime” (U.F.O. remix) (Verve)

Another brilliant remix from the U.F.O. guys. Is the main point of their
remix that we can’t hear Sarah Vaughan sing “summertime”? I don’t know.
Anyway, the best soundtrack for my thoughts about the last summer.

    20. Jazzanova “Days To Come” (Ian O’Brienn remix) (JCR)

One of the biggest clubtracks of year 2002 for me.

    21. Agent K “These Hands” (Mumo)

    Kaidi Tatham and his hands!

    22. Nightmares On Wax “Environment“ (Warp)

From the new album by NOW, which was a bit disappointing for us. Anyway,
this track is rocking. Powerful vocal by Chyna B.

    23. The Underwolves “Shaken” (Fauna Flash drum’n’bass mix) (JCR)

Fauna Flash deliver a d’n’b version of The Underwolves gem.
