STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
No Trainspotters' Corner specifically on last week's show, but if you were
listening closely you would have heard:
- 4 Hero's Marc Mac aka Visioneers doing a cover of Moe Koffman's "Day's
Gone By" as sampled by Jazzy Jeff for Jill Scott's "Slowly Surely"
- a dub version of Slave's 1979 boogie classic "Just a Touch of Love", with
the bassline used in De La Soul's "Keepin the Faith"
- a wild latin-flavoured remix of James Brown by Toshio Matsuura aka
Fantasista
- Don Drummond's 1964 ska hit "Man in the Street" as sampled by BDP for
Edutainment (check out the 4 hour DVD that comes with Soul Jazz's new
"Studio One Story" comp - it even has English subtitles for those of you
stuggling to understand the Jamaican accents!)
- a killer Rendell/Carr track from "Impressed with Gilles Peterson", GP's
deep compilation of British jazz in which he hopes fans of Koop and
Cinematic Orchestra will dig deeper into the roots.
Plus, we had a great blend of hip hop, funk and beats from UK DJ and
producer Jon Kennedy. (No, I don't know what his middle initial is.) Jon has
had a number of releases on the wonderful Tru Thoughts label and is now
getting ready to release his second album on Manchester's Grand Central
Records. Make sure you check out his websites, with lots of his own artwork
and some great links including the "care and feeding of vinyl" page.

Tomorrow's guest mix comes from my hometown - Melbourne. In fact it comes
from no less than Australia's current DMC champ (and 8th in the world), DJ
Selekt. What is refreshing is that Selekt has a deeper appreciation of
soulful music than most battle DJs, and this you'll hear in his mix. Just
don't ask for a tracklisting though ... I don't think your email account
could handle it.
until then
