    Hello all,

What an awful goddamn week‹losing Herbie Mann on Tuesday, and Barry White
today. Never got to see either of them, because Herbie hadn't been to L.A.
in years. I remember a week-long stint he did at the Blue Note in NYC a few
years back, with a ridiculous slew of guests every night, including the man
Roy Ayers and Cissy Houston to name a very few. It sounded blissful, but I
wasn't living there at the time. And Barry I just thought would be around
    for much longer. Damn.
But we have to press on, this being one of the best weekends of the year
to drink one's self into oblivion (provided one stays off the road). I think
I'll be starting by going to see one of the two most beautiful Japanese boys
I've personally known, my boy Paul Takahashi, who's spinning with Tony
Watson @ Gabah tonight. I'll possibly be stopping in at the opening @ La Luz
first. Tomorrow evening, the Cinematheque is having an "In Person with Nancy
Sinatra," showing "Movin' with Nancy" and "Wild Angels," followed by
    conversation with Nancy.
The best item of the week in Los Angeles isn't until Monday, though.
That would be Gotan Project, which I'm so looking forward to. They head to
NYC by next weekend for a gig @ Central Park's Summerstage, but I've heard
the visuals are as important as the live sound, so I can't quite figure how
it'll translate outside, and probably in daylight. But, hell, I'ts free.
Elsewhere in L.A., Aquanote are at the Ivar next Thursday, which should be
    lovely.
The biggest news in any city is the MIGHTY, ABSOLUTELY INSANE house
lineup in NYC tomorrow evening, what has to be the best lineup in U.S.
history (outside Winter Music Conference): PHIL ASHER, LITTLE LOUIE VEGA AND
KENNY DOPE, DJ SPINNA, JAZZY JEFF, FRANKIE FELICIANO, DANNY KRIVIT AND TIMMY
REGISFORD!!!! All following the Shelter day in Central Park with Timmy R.
and live sets by Chaka Khan and her sister Indira! I don't think Asher is
doing any other American dates, either. (Someone please let me know if I'm
    wrong.)
That's followed by a free gig by salsa god Jimmy Bosch, the first of the
man Dego's dates on Wednesday, another gig by my girl Tessa on the 11th, and
a rare New York date by Ronny Jordan next weekend. Loveliness all around.
On the London front, it's equally lovely, with the goddess that is Joyce
doing two nights with Bugge Wesseltoft. If you're in the city, you'd be a
damn fool to miss it. Haven't heard the LP yet, but that combination can't
possibly miss. Elsewhere, the man Badmarsh is doing a DJ set (sorry it's not
a live date) with Shaanti, the much-hyped McKay is @ the JC, followed by
Roy Hargrove and Ive Mendes. And London Elektricity are doing their live set
(which I'd kill to f**king see already!), alongside Peshay and Ross Allen.
That's it for this installment. Raise a glass to Herbie and Barry this
weekend, and have a happy and safe 4th, whatever you think of our criminal
    government.

    Respectfully,

    Brian Baltin
