I am a HUGE matthew Herbert fan, but...
I found I was rather nonplussed by "Goodbye Swingtime." I think it
suffered due to my sky-high expectations, but I was a bit disapointed
with how relatively straight he left much of the material. It just
can't compare to the intimate magic of "Bodily Functions" - but what can?
On the other hand, the theory behind his work is strong as always,
lending an entirely different dimension to the music. This and other
elements seem to come across much better in the band's live
performances, which have apparently been stunning. Look for them this
fall, opening for Bjork on many of her North American dates.
totally unrelated brilliance: the new John Arnold album with
collaboration from Ayro and Amp Fiddler. completely stunning!
