    THIS WEEK'S REVIEWS
    Truby Trio--Jaleo/Satisfaction 12" (Compost)
When I first dropped this on the show last Friday, I played it at 33rpm.
Same for the b-side, as well. Even at those speeds, they sounded quite
good with its nice production. But then finding out that Concha Buika,
the vocalist on "Jaleo," was a woman...well, I've turned it up to its
normal 45rpm speed. All I can say was "Goddamn!!" This is some seriously
delicious madness, putting the "up" in uptempo big time with its jammin'
Latin percussion. Rainer, Christian, and Roland makes this a stunner
just in time for summer. Drop this and watch the floors go apeshit...a
must-have, absolutely! "Satisfaction," mainly a production of Fauna
Flash, is also a serious funky uptempo delight that is sure to keep the
floor moving in the best way. Look forward to the long player "Elevator
    Music" from Compost soon.
The Dutch Rhythm Combo--Go Dutch! EP 12" (Pulver/Germany)
Felix Haaksman is The Dutch Rhythm Combo, and he seems to fit the Pulver
groove quite well with the latest 12" from the fledging Stuttgart-based
label. Haaksman gets the ball rolling with "Come On," sort of
downtempo-on-acid with some sonic ambiance and Annik's sultry vocals.
Then Max Fresh of the duo Hidden Agenda gives "Come On" a bit of a
techno bent with some hard synth-bass bizniz and gives Annik's vocals a
dubwise sprinkling throughout. The b-side starts out with a bouncy
musical flava in "Bump Up The Jam," with guitar riffs and some phat
bass. Haaksman ends the "Dutch" journey with the title track, some
mid-tempo downbeat madness sure to sway some hips. Them Pulver guys are
    on a roll, yes indeedy.
    Duptribe--EP 12" (Hilltribe/Germany)
And speaking of Stuttgart, Pulver was kind enough to give a hand to a
new label from their home area. Hilltribe is the label, and Duptribe the
name of the act in question. Various strands make up this EP. "SOS"
attempts to go one up on the Paul Simon original with some heavy beats
the way I like them, and also some respectable vocal work to boot. The
beats get a bit heavier on "The Haunted," a midtempo groove with some
spooky keys thrown in the mix. "04:20pm International Potsmoka's Time"
is a reggae-influenced groover with some toasting to match, and "Negra
Samba" ends the EP with a nice staccato rhythm easing on through some
delicous downbeat grooves. Not a bad start for Hilltribe...let's see
    where it goes from here.
The First Floor Brothers--EP 12" (Citrona)
The latest gem from Citrona Recordings in Florida; the third one, in
fact. This release from Chicago-based Seth and Nate Vanek, for the most
part, aims for the dancefloor. Take note of the uplifting groove of a
remix from DC's Thunderball of "Fashionably Late" with some nice use of
drum rhythms, voice samples, and some Rhodes work. Remix pressure from
DC's Thunderball gives "Late" a dancefloor lift. The original version
contrasts the remix with its full downtempo feel, and I do mean that in
a positive sense. Nice laidback feel with the keys flowing. The flip
starts with "Signal 106," with Greg Long working it with drums and
keys that gives the downtempo a bit of a lift. Then the tune gets its
groove on with some dirty bass in its original version.
Abicah Soul Meets Glenn Underground--EP 12" (Moods & Grooves white)
Gene Hunt--The Next Level EP 12" (Moods & Grooves white)
Forthcoming deep house pressure from Detroit's Moods & Grooves Records.
First one is from Abicah Soul as he teams up with Glenn Underground for
a Latin-flavored selection of house-fueled goodness. "Esta Hermoso
Cancion" is a bit of a deep-house samba arriving just in time for some
tropical summer afternoons. The Latin influence continues with "Negro
Yosoy Peligro", continuing the tropical flavor with some spacey fx
    sounds and nice Latin percussion.
Some soulful house comes from Gene Hunt with his new EP, starting out
with some smooth vocal work working nicely over some funky house biz on
"I Live." B-sided music comes on two tracks. "Skeemin Boheman" starts
off in relaxation mode, then kicks up into a nice groover with some
vibraphone niceties. Check them both. "Disco Trip" ends the EP with some
funk-bass goodness but does it in an "easy-does-it" sort of way. Check
    them out.
    Daniel Magg--O-Bah 12" (Compost)
Daniel Magg--Set For Seizure 12" (Compost)
Two news slabs of vinyl of tunes taken from the "Facets" debut album
from Daniel Magg, one half of Wordless People. "Set For Seizure"
features remixes from Melbourne-based DJ/producer Ennio Styles (also
host of the "Stylin'" radio show there) & Anthony Nicolson. All good,
but the winning remix for me comes from Wagon Cookin, slamming that tune
home with their signature mix-up. "O-Bah" has mixes from Serge (with
some trippy funked-up mid-tempo craziness) & Juan Martinez. All the
mixes here are quite worthy, but do check Slope's take with a rough
synth-bass jammer. Also pay attention to the collab from Do Right's Hand
Polished & John Kong with some funky synth-bass and some really nice
musical buildup throughout. Out soon, so look for them and grab 'em.
