STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
For many years I have been a Snowboy fan, from his heavy afro-cuban jazz
recordings with his group The Latin Section to visiting his Hi Hat and Deep
Funk sessions during a visit to London in 1995, to his Hi Hat compilations
unearthing future jazz dance classics until then only released on CD, to his
newsletters and writings in Big Daddy and Grand Slam magazines. So it was
good to finally catch up with the man to find out what he's getting up to
and hear his views on things like DJs playing CDs and using the mic. With
his injured wrist on the mend, Snowboy has lots of great recording projects
in the pipeline. He has now signed to Chilli Funk who will be releasing a
new Snowboy & the Latin Section album next year, followed by Seiji remixing
the entire album! A collaboration with Seiji on a broken beat remake of a
jazz dance classic (can't say quite yet) is also in the works. Then there'll
be a latin funk album for Kenny Dope and Keb Darge's Kay Dee imprint. And
right now a more house-oriented 12" "It's About Time" with Bob Jones and the
Interns is available through Chilli Funk. Let's hope the wrist survives all
this activity!

Trainspotters' Corner returned last week linking the bass and feel of the
great jazzy cut "Dreams" from Ty's incredible new "Upwards" album, with the
track "Science Fiction" from one of my favourite ever releases, Nobukazu
Takemura's 1994 "Child's View" album. If you haven't heard it, don't expect
his recent releases to give you much of an idea, as he's gone more
experimental since then.

If you're reading this newsletter in time, think about dropping into
Honkytonks for Open Sesame tonight. We've got a special visitor from Perth,
DJ PMI, gracing the decks for a soulful beats session with Kano and myself.
And don't miss tomorrow's show which will feature part 1 of the Stylin focus
on Philly, with legendary DJ and producer Jazzy Jeff dropping into the show
for a chat and live mix with his vocal partners Pauly Yamz and V. Part 2
comes next week with the Roots.
until then
