STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

Well I seem to be getting through my list of childhood heroes on Stylin.
Jazzy Jeff a couple of months ago, now DJ Premier. I'll have to work on
getting Derrick May and Trouble Funk into the show. Premier has been touring
with his Gang Starr partner Guru for the Good Vibrations festival and is
also at the Prince tonight (it's not too late). There are so many classic
hip hop tunes Gang Starr have had over the years, so I had to include a few
personal favourites in the show. It's good to hear that their latest album
has kept to their classic sound. Apparently they're now out of their major
label deal, so it will be interesting to see what move they make next. I
must also mention a surprise highlight from Good Vibrations: soul queen
Ledisi doing heavy backing vocals for Blackalicious.

This Friday, I have the return of Sweden's Mad Mats with an interview and
guest DJ mix. Mats is known for his label and club night Raw Fusion and for
being perhaps one of the most complete DJs in the world. Tune in on Friday
    to hear what I mean.

My attempts to get London's Bugz in the Attic in the studio don't seem to
have worked out timing-wise, so your last chance to check them out will be
tomorrow night or tonight (depending on when you read this), Thursday 5th at
Honkytonks for an Open Sesame session. Represented here by Afronaught (aka
Orin Walters) and Mikey Gen'ral, the Bugz were formed from individuals with
backgrounds in the house, drum n bass, hip hop and jazz scenes, and are now
at the top of their game twisting all of these influences into new forms of
percussive soul. Dons of the so-called West London "broken beat" sound, they
have risen above categories to gather respect from all quarters. Amongst the
most in-demand of remixers, the Bugz have reworked tunes for Macy Gray, Zero
7, Nitin Sawhney, Jazzanova and MAW Records as well as being responsible for
massive underground anthems like Afronaught's "Transcend Me", Alison David's
"Dreams" and their Fela Kuti rework, "Zombie 2003" (all tunes making the
Stylin best of year charts). Represented here by Afronaught (aka Orin
Walters) and Mikey Gen'ral, this is your last chance to hear them bring the
pressure of their London club sessions at Co-op and FabricLive to Melbourne.

    until then
    Ennio Styles
