Well, it depends on what you mean by "really good." I'd say if an artist
was living with their mom one year, and the next year they were living
in Malibu Canyon and driving a Bentley, all for performing the songs
they made at their mom's house, they got a "really good" deal.
And, a "really good" deal involves issues of creative control. I mean, a
lot of really, really good and innovative albums have been released on
major labels. "Sgt. Peppers?" "Led Zeppelin 4?" "Kind of Blue"? "Bitches
Brew?" "Download This?"
Just off the top of my head...
I have yet to meet the major label that provides a really good deal to
musicians/artists. ;)
I know of a few artists who would turn down deals with majors because
they
prefer the freedom and treatment they receive on smaller labels. They
seem
content with the level because they know their audience is never going
to be
huge. You can lead a horse...
