_Moongerms_ is an excellent record. Doug Watson's webpages have lots
of pointers to good CTI records:

Though they did much work that makes purists happier, I'm really fond
of the Deodato & Lalo Schifrin CTI dates. Bob James, bien sur.
Hubbard, Szabo, Laws, Airto, Turrentine, Desmond, Hall, Weston,
Jackson-- hard to go wrong as long as you're coming at it from the
direction you're coming at it from, & not a jazz-purist angle.

Truly excellent site, especially the photo gallery!:

Definitely the MPS of the USA--
You should also investigate the production work of the Mizell
Brothers-- there's a comp floating around called _Sky High_, I think;
or pick up the appropriate Donald Byrd/Johnny Hammond Smith records.
Those early Blackbyrds records are pretty great; Grover Washington
Jr's (yuh-huh) _Inner City Blues_ (on the not-to-be-ignored CTI
sublabel Kudu) & _Mister Magic_ are also right there in that
airy-but-not-too-"smooov" jazzfunk niche.
