Nice to see a good discussion going!
re: rock music can't be made by itself. Not true. McCartney and Steve
Winwood are 2 that jump to mind; I might be wrong, but I think "Arc of a
Diver" was a completely solo effort. BTW, the idea of a solo "producer" has
been around quite a while now. Mike Oldfield, (Tubular Bells), Joe Zawinul
(Dialects), etc. are 25-30 years old now. Heck, Sidney Bechet made a
recording of "Ahab the Arab" in which he played all the instruments, and
that was back in the '30's or '40's! It's just that now, the technology has
made it available to almost everyone.
re: Art Tatum. Yeah, but Art Tatum's come along about once every 50 years,
or so it seems. Admittedly, the sampler (or the entire digital studio) is a
much more expressive instrument than piano, but I think many electronic trax
would benefit from getting more real input from real players, maybe. (Then
again, finding real creative players who are in it for more than the money,
as Elson says, is pretty difficult.)
re: Bossa Nova, tango, et.al, being rhythm based. Yes, but not just; the
harmonies are equally important. You can play bossa nova on a piano, or a
guitar, or a conga, or you can sing acapella, and everone will know you're
playing bossa nova. Take away the programming from the average D&B track,
and what have you got?
Anyway, this is not to dis the newer stuff that's out there. I agree that
O'Brien, Wookie, P'taah, 2 Banks of 4, Roni Size and the like are the shit.
(PS, does anyone know if "The Soul of Science" with O'Brien and DeGrigorio
are remixes, or is it just a compilation?)
