Gabbah is quite a few blocks east of Highland...more like a mile and a half :)
(That be mah hood, sir Cactus Boy. :))
It's 1 1/2 blocks west of Normandie Avenue, near where the 101 Freeway
    crosses over Melrose.

Oh come now. Glam Metal wasn't the only music coming out of here in the
'80s...New Wave was big here until alternative rock consumed KROQ and
turned it into a "retro flashback" novelty. And we did have a hip-hop scene
centered around a certain AM station called K-DAY which every true local
hip-hop head over 25 knows and remembers fondly...

Oh and another great place is Temple Bar, 1026 Wilshire Blvd in Santa
Monica (a few blocks east of Lincoln). Lots of acidly jazzy/funky/live
hip-hop bands play there. Check their site: http://www.templebarlive.com/

Also if you're into hardcore jazz, go to 5th Street Dick's on Degnan Ave.
in Leimert Park or Club Los Feliz in Los Feliz (Hillhurst & Los Feliz) on
    Tuesday nights.
