    Oh there's a big difference - a CD is roughtly 5", a phonograph record is
    12" and somewhat thicker.
    There's also more resources & energy put not into manufacturing the media
    but pressing, etc.
    Add to that the fact that only developed nations (with the exception of
    Jamaica, heh) have access to vinyl pressing plants, whereas
    CD duplication is a much simpler process and can be found in third world
    countries (which is where a lot of pirated copies originate from, but
    that's another story :)). In short, vinyl is a predominantly first-world
    luxury.
