Exactly. A few months ago, I was flicking channels
and came across C-SPAN. It was the proceedings on
Clear Channel, and it disturbed me because I am a fan
of the true spirit of radio, the stuff that's "left of
the dial" (of course most people don't have dials for
the radio but that's another story). Don Henley spoke
out and said that most new musicians today cannot and
will not get mainstream radio airplay. If you're not
    P. Diddy, or if it's not "Hotel California", or not
Faith Hill, or have a deal with any of the one major
label that exists (these days, it feels like every
label is trying to consolidate with each other), you
are going to have to take the college route. Unless
you have college money to help get your music on every
college radio station, it's not going to work. If
    you're a "has-been" jazz or soul artist, there's a
good chance you'll be tossed in the trash. Oh, new
Marlena Shaw CD for $3.50 at Stevie's Closeout? Why
    not.

Anyone who makes music, anyone who is a radio DJ, pay
attention to the proceedings of Clear Channel. The
fact that they can own billboards and venues in town
is even more disturbing. You can't escape Ashanti if
she's coming into town, because her face is on every
Billboard within a ten mile radius of the STARBUCKS
    AMPHITHEATER AND TOFU SHACK.

A lot of artists are just playing along, because they
know they will not (and could not) get paid in any
other way. It's now part of the system, and the
system has been ugly for the last 15 years.

    Kill your radio.
