The article on the DNA Lounge website is from the point of
view of the impending legislations that's in Congress (Hollings Bill)\
that may or may not happen now. Good introductins
I think
there are some artists that have survived on royalty checks for
plays better than they have with any deal they ever had with their
record label. A publisher can help get your music on commercials
and/or in films, so I wouldnt discount working with them totally.
Yes, you can also self publish your music and self register everything
and make and run your own record label too if you want to. It all
comes down to what your priorities are.
For more info on the legalities of who owns what in the recording
business, I recommend Donald Passman "Everything you Ever Wanted
to Know About the Music Business" Its written by a lawyer in
terms that you can understand and not only gives good legal advice
but really good pratical advice about all sorts of agreements having
to do with the "business" side of jaaaaaaazz.
